Exploring the MS Fridtjof Nansen – A Pre-Inaugural Adventure

On September 18, 2024, Rod and I had the incredible privilege of stepping aboard the HX MS Fridtjof Nansen in Vancouver for a two-night pre-inaugural sailing. From the moment we boarded, it was clear that this wasn’t your typical cruise experience—it was something much more. We explored every corner of the ship, dining in all of the restaurants, enjoying the comfortable lounges, and even venturing out on a thrilling Zodiac excursion. We attended lectures and spent time in the science lab, which brought the spirit of exploration alive in such an interactive way. The ship itself is absolutely stunning—its interiors are crafted in a style that feels distinctly Scandinavian, with clean lines, warm wood, natural textures, and a design that reflects harmony with nature. Everywhere we turned, the décor felt inviting and purposeful, a perfect match for an expedition ship.

The MS Fridtjof Nansen is part of HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions), an independent expedition company that specializes in small-ship experiences focused on immersing guests in the natural world. Unlike traditional cruising, where the ship is often the main attraction, HX is all about the destinations—helping travelers connect deeply with the places they visit. Their fleet sails to some of the most breathtaking corners of the globe: Alaska’s rugged coastline, the icy wilderness of Antarctica, the dramatic fjords of Greenland, the volcanic beauty of Iceland, the history-rich British Isles and European coasts, the wildlife wonderland of the Galápagos Islands, and even legendary routes like the Northwest Passage and remote stretches of Arctic Canada. Imagine standing among penguins in Antarctica, exploring volcanic landscapes in Iceland, or gliding past ancient glaciers in Greenland—that’s the kind of wonder HX brings to its guests.

We came away from this experience truly inspired. The MS Fridtjof Nansen isn’t just another cruise ship—it’s a vessel built for explorers. With hybrid technology, beautifully designed spaces, and a staff of passionate experts, it offers the comfort and style travelers want while still delivering the authenticity and adventure that true expedition travelers crave. For us, this sailing was a reminder that there are different ways to see the world—and sometimes the best experiences aren’t about glittering atriums or flashy shows, but about getting closer to nature, culture, and discovery. If you’re looking for something beyond the ordinary, where every day feels like an expedition, we can’t recommend HX and the MS Fridtjof Nansen enough.
