Sailing the Christmas Markets with AmaWaterways: A Magical Group Journey from Amsterdam to Basel

In December 2023, Rod and I had the pleasure of hosting a festive AmaWaterways Christmas Markets group sailing from Amsterdam to Basel, and what a joyful, memory-filled journey it was! We were joined by 21 wonderful guests, all excited to immerse themselves in the twinkling lights, cozy markets, and old-world charm that define a European Christmas river cruise. From the start, it was more than just a sailing—it was a celebration. To make it even more special, I (Beth) planned a few custom activities just for our group, designed to bring us together and create moments that would last long after the journey ended.

We set sail on the AmaSiena during what turned out to be a high water event, a scenario that can occur in winter river cruising. But thanks to the incredible captain and crew, what could have been a disruption became an adventure in flexibility and exceptional service. After sailing the stunning Rhine Gorge and enjoying a delightful stop in Rüdesheim, we boarded buses for a comfortable transfer to Strasbourg where a seamless ship swap awaited us. Our group moved into the same cabins aboard the AmaLucia, with all of our luggage waiting for us, and best of all, our beloved cruise manager stayed with us—providing a consistent, friendly face throughout. Better still we didn't miss ANY of our ports of call or excursions.

Instead of one night, we had three full days in Strasbourg, allowing ample time to explore its breathtaking Christmas Markets. AmaWaterways even added a bonus excursion to Baden-Baden, and gifted each guest €25 in pocket money to enjoy lunch or shop for treasures in port. Every market we visited sparkled with festive charm, and guests had plenty of time to wander, sip glühwein, and soak in the magic. On land, our two-night pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam and extra night in Basel gave us time to fully experience both cities, and we were especially enchanted by Basel’s Christmas Market. Onboard, the ships were decked in holiday décor, and the spirit of the season was alive in every detail.

From start to finish, AmaWaterways went above and beyond—proving once again why we’re proud to recommend them. This journey reminded us all that while the destinations are spectacular, it’s the people and the shared experiences that make a trip truly unforgettable.
